Molinos, Miguel de
(c. 1640–97)
   Mystic and Devotional Writer.
   Molinos was born in Muniesa, Spain. He was ordained into the Roman Catholic priesthood and he spent most of his life in Rome. He was the author of the Guida Spirituale, in which he traced the path to spiritual perfection through the total annihilation of the individual will. Although Molinos was a personal friend of Pope innocent xi, the guide was quickly attacked as ‘Quietist’ by the Jesuits and it must be admitted that members of religious orders who followed its advice all too often neglected the precepts of their Rules and caused severe disruptions within their communities. On the initiative of King Louis XIV of France, Molinos was arrested in 1685 and two years later he was put on trial. Although he was prepared to recant, he was accused of immorality and was kept in captivity for the rest of his life. He seems to have borne his imprisonment with remarkable patience. The guide was an important influence on Protestant Pietist circles amongst whom its author was both admired and pitied.
